Our Buildout of 63 Main Ave

Soon to be our new home

Eavesdrop as we buildout 63 Main AVenue

The earliest record I can find of the current building at 63 Main Avenue is a Sanborn map from 1905 (accessed via Princeton University’s library). This map features a “Bank of Asbury Park & Ocean Grove” at the corner of Main Avenue and Pilgrim Pathway.

The building was explicitly designed in neoclassical style, to look and feel like an ancient Greek temple — inside and out. The ceilings are 22 feet tall, supported, at least aesthetically!, by paired pilasters and high arched south-facing windows.

It remained a bank until 2008, including a major corporate renovation in 1962, whose greatest update was a drop ceiling in the main hall. This drop ceiling completely obscured the original majestic vault.

The building changed owners in 2008, at which point it was converted to a women’s clothing store until spring of 2024. Odyssey Coffee holds the lease as of June 2024.

  • 1905—2008: Bank

  • 2008—2024: Women’s clothing store

  • 2025, etc.: Odyssey Coffee

Time to build something beautiful for Ocean Grove!

We are doing so much more than merely moving Odyssey Coffee from 50 Main Avenue to this noble historic building. We are also taking the first steps toward creating a community center, and restoring this iconic classical structure into the heaven-meets-earth architectural wonder it was intended to be.
